Methadone/Buprenorphine Treatment: available

To arrange continued dosing of methadone or buprenorphine the patient’s home prescriber must send an application to a regional social service centre or a county coordinating service (see contact details below). Patients will either be referred to a pharmacy, a specialised treatment centre or an office-based GP. Usually there is daily dosing. We strongly recommend to clarify take-home arrangements and costs for treatment and dosing (probably some 150 Nkr daily) before a patient’s journey.

Importation of Methadone/Buprenorphine: not clear

It is allowed to bring a 30 days’ supply of methadone/buprenorphine into Norway. Travellers must carry with them a letter from their home prescriber (including quantity of methadone/buprenorphine, daily dosage, dates of arrival in and departure from Norway) which clearly supports their need for the medication. It should be noted that residents from one of the EU signatory countries of the “Schengen Implementing Convention, Article 75“ must carry with them a “Certification to carry drugs and/or other psychotropic substances for treatment purposes – Schengen Implementing Convention, Article 75” form when travelling to Norway, provided such forms are available in the corresponding countries. In addition, bottles must be labelled by a pharmacy (patient’s name, substance), tablet packs must be stamped by the prescribing doctor/clinic (also the patient’s name must be written on the pack).
